Blender animation, drawn by hand

Stop plotting motion.
Paint it.

Turn strokes in Blender's 3D Viewport into object animation. Choose a motion brush, draw the movement, and refine it with editable guides. When you're ready, keep the result as standard Blender keyframes.

Blender 4.5 LTS minimum · Object Mode · 12 months of support + updates

00 / See it move

A faster way to direct motion.

Watch Motion Painter turn viewport gestures into controlled, art-directable animation.

01 / Core workflow

From gesture to animation.

Motion Painter brings path creation, targeting, motion design, rotation, and output control into one visual workflow inside Blender.

01 / Paint paths

Draw motion directly in the viewport.

Draw a freehand guide or click connected segments with Motion Polygon. Work on the view plane, at the 3D Cursor, or across visible surfaces. Use Chosen Surface to project onto one mesh with an adjustable offset; pixel-based spacing keeps your strokes predictable at different scene scales.

02 / Motion brushes

One stroke. Eleven starting points.

Start with a focused motion preset, then tune ordinary settings to make it yours. Save custom brushes in the blend file, update them, and copy or paste settings between paths.

03 / Motion modes

Follow the rail or feel the field.

Rail mode follows your guide, with keys based on editable control points or distance spacing. Forcefield mode shapes movement around the stroke with pull, push, orbit, wave, and jitter. Start with a direct route, then give it your own character.

04 / Stack + blend

Build complex motion in layers.

Stack multiple guides and decide how they interact. Takeover lets a higher path assume control over a smooth frame range; Add combines its flow with motion from lower paths.

05 / Targets

Direct one object or a whole group.

Pick nearby objects automatically in screen or 3D space, or use your own selection. Hierarchy Roots targets the highest included parent when its children are also inside the brush. Add or exclude objects as you refine the group, with improved motion handling for animated parents.

06 / Rotation

Movement that knows where to look.

Face the final direction of travel, look toward the path, or add spin. Bank into turns and blend from the original pose, or use Keep Offset to preserve starting facing. Nose Axis, Roll Reference, and a labeled axis gizmo help you set up directional rotation.

07 / Curves + editing

Stay visual. Stay editable.

Turn a guide into a linked Blender curve, or create a guide from an existing curve. Refine its shape with Blender's curve tools and let the animation update. Version 1.0 improves linked editing, follows evaluated NURBS centerlines, and includes the closing segment of cyclic polyline paths.

08 / Clean output

Editable guides. Cleaner keyframes.

Simplify location and rotation keys within your chosen tolerances. Inspect movement with continuous speed colors and trace guide contributions with colored key outlines in the Timeline and Dope Sheet. Finalize the motion to keep ordinary Blender keys for further editing.

02 / Since the beta

Draw on your scene. See every layer.

Since the launch beta, Motion Painter has gained Chosen Surface drawing and guide-colored key overlays. The full release brings these new tools together with clearer paths, more timing control, and a stronger animation foundation.

New / Chosen Surface

Let the surface shape the journey.

Choose a mesh and paint a route across its surface. The chosen mesh stays out of your animation targets.

See it guide a car over uneven terrain. Inspired by a suggestion from our Discord community—join us and share your ideas.

New / Colored key overlays

Connect the keys to the motion.

Color Guide Keys matches Timeline and Dope Sheet key outlines to their guides. Stacked contributions show multiple colors.

Also shown: existing Simplify Keyframes, Speed Colors, Visible Padding, and the Motion Guide layer system.

Timing

Shape the pace, too.

Preserve the rhythm of your stroke with Draw Speed. Brake before bends with Turn Slowdown and control recovery with Acceleration. Forcefield Speed Up and Slow Down adjust the start and finish without changing the trajectory.

Existing animation

Refine with more confidence.

Improved ownership tracking restores displaced source keys when generated motion is removed. Shared actions are copied before writing, so animating one target does not change another object using the same action.

Everyday editing

Keep your changes in step.

Undo and redo keep guide settings and generated animation consistent. Failed rebuilds restore the previous result, while linked-curve edits and parented motion previews update more reliably.

03 / Roadmap

Motion Painter is just getting started.

Object animation is the foundation of v1.0. Rig Mode is planned, and Physics Mode is experimental: two directions for extending the same visual workflow.

Available now

Object Mode

Paint paths for Blender objects, layer influences, generate rotation, and keep the final animation editable from guides or F-curves.

01
Planned

Rig Mode

Extend the painting workflow to rigs, making it possible to direct bones and character motion with drawn gestures instead of object-only targets.

02
Experimental

Physics Mode

Exploring connections between painted motion, Blender rigid bodies, and force fields for art-directed simulations. This experimental direction is separate from the released object-animation tools.

03
04 / Good to know

Fits your Blender workflow.

Create with procedural guides, then take the finished motion into Blender's own animation tools.

Compatibility

Built for object animation.

Requires Blender 4.5 LTS or newer. Paint in Object Mode to generate location and optional rotation keys. Forcefield is a procedural motion mode; the separate Physics Mode remains experimental.

Development disclosure

Artist-directed, AI-assisted.

Developed using an AI-assisted workflow, directed and quality-tested by an experienced Blender artist.

Can I edit the generated keyframes?

Yes. Active guides manage their generated keys and can rebuild them when you change the setup. When you want to continue by hand, use Keep Keys, Remove Path. Guides connected through shared targets are finalized together, preserving their combined animation.

Can I animate large groups?

Use manual selection or Auto Select, with Hierarchy Roots to avoid targeting both included parents and children. New strokes have a 256-target limit and additional workload checks. If a stroke exceeds the limits, reduce the targets, shorten the path, or increase its speed.

How long are support and updates included?

Your purchase includes a 12-month Superhive Support Period from the purchase date, including purchases made during the launch sale. It covers creator support and product updates released during that period. You keep permanent access to the versions received during your Support Period.

When it ends, you can keep using those versions. Renewing for another 12 months is optional, at the renewal price shown on Superhive. This is not a subscription: there are no automatic renewals. How Superhive Support Periods work.

Existing purchases retain the support and update terms offered at the time of purchase.

Where can I get help?

For product support during your Support Period, contact me through your Superhive inbox. You can also join the Motion Painter Discord for community discussion, bug reports, and feedback. Include your Blender and Motion Painter versions when reporting an issue.
